"Majority" rules? AFA election at Avelo included only 1 in 5
On April 7, we shared that only 20 out of 65 flight attendants at Avelo Airlines would be allowed to vote in their union election. However, we recently learned that only 14 out of 77 flight attendants were actually allowed to vote and only eight voted for AFA. This means that less than 20% of Avelo’s flight attendants were allowed to vote in the election — even though union representation impacts all of them.
AFA claimed that it received “super majority support” and that Avelo's flight attendants showed “incredible solidarity.” But the facts tell a different story: 8-of-77 voted for AFA – just 10% of current Avelo flight attendants. And even though just 10% voted for AFA representation, now all Avelo flight attendants will now be represented by AFA unless the election is overturned.
Despite claiming to be a “democratic union,” AFA advocated for the vote to occur only among this limited number of flight attendants, effectively disenfranchising the majority of Avelo’s flight attendants. Now, they’re also claiming there was overwhelming support at Avelo for their union, but it’s clear that this is not the case.
We are proud of the direct relationship that we have at Delta and the benefits that it delivers: it means you can stand up and raise issues, ideas, and suggestions directly with any level of leadership. We can then work together, directly and quickly, to make Delta an even better place to work and fly. With AFA – whether you’re voting, negotiating, or sharing a grievance – there are no guarantees.
Don’t risk it, don’t sign it.
