When you’re locked into union negotiations, you can get left behind
When “Locked In” Really Means “Locked Out” -- and Left Behind
During initial contract negotiations, the company and the union must make their way through hundreds of topics and 30+ contract sections with many complexities – and during that time improvements are rarely made to pay and work rules.
AFA talks a lot about “locking in” your pay, work rules, and benefits through negotiations – but what it doesn’t tell you is that this lengthy process means you could be left behind while you are “locked out” of seeing pay increases or other improvements for years.
And once you have a contract, the pay, benefits, and work rules agreed upon are usually “locked in” for the duration of the contract (usually 4-5 years), plus whatever times it takes to negotiate the next contract (and there’s no saying how long that could be). During this time, the terms of the existing contract – including pay, work rules, and more – generally stay in place, regardless of improvements happening elsewhere in the industry.
Just look at Spirit, where AFA spent nine years negotiating for a second contract while flight attendants saw no pay increases and little to no improvements. In that same time, Delta flight attendants received nine pay raises amounting to a 48% bump in pay.
What This Would Mean for You
With the direct relationship we have today, Delta is able to make quick improvements based on your feedback, including a first-of-its-kind boarding premium pay, a 4% pay raise (the first raise among peers in approximately 18 months), and a special profit sharing payment (despite headwinds in the first half of 2021).
Delta flight attendants benefit more and achieve change faster when we all work together, directly as a team. “Locking in” life with AFA would forever change the way we work together.
Don’t get locked out and left behind.
Don’t Risk It. Don’t Sign It.
