Do you know what you’d be getting into with AFA?
Before signing an A-card, you should know what you’d be getting into with AFA.
Every AFA member is governed by something called AFA’s Constitution and Bylaws (“C&B”) and Policy Manual. These are the set of “rules” that govern the relationship between flight attendants and the union – and you never actually get to vote on them.
There is a lot covered in the C&B and Policy Manual that would impact you if AFA were elected to represent all flight attendants at Delta – and when you take a closer look at AFA’s rules, you’ll notice that AFA seems more interested in protecting itself than its members.
For example, you:
- Would only directly elect local officers at the base level.
- Would not directly elect the officers on the Master Executive Council (MEC), the group that oversees union issues at the company level.
- Would not elect the AFA President or other International officers.
- Would not elect members of the contract negotiations committee. This is decided by the MEC.
- Would not be able to join any meeting that the MEC decides to close-off to members.
- Would not get to vote on the amount of mandatory dues you pay to AFA.
- Would not get to vote on any changes to the C&B or Policy Manual.
And there’s more – under AFA’s rules, you can expect:
- Fines, suspension, or expulsion for disobeying AFA or “acting in any manner disloyal to the Union.”
- To pay dues during the first 90 days of a leave of absence, even if you are not receiving a paycheck.
- A union contract that requires termination of your employment if you fail to pay dues to AFA.
Compared to AFA representation, the direct relationship is a more effective approach for addressing issues big and small. Do your research. Don’t Risk It. Don’t Sign It.
