Richard is an MCO-based ramp agent who previously worked as a union representative at Northwest Airlines. He says he can tell, from experience, that life with a union often does not live up to what is promised.
“A lot of the employees who are pushing for a union have never worked for a union. The union makes a lot of promises but that’s all it is. Promises. They can’t guarantee you anything. They are promising that the new hires are going to make more money. You’re not going to make top pay in 2 or 3 years. All airlines – United, American, Southwest, they have unions. It takes about ten years to get to that point. And it takes years to negotiate a contract .... I don’t want to go without a raise for 2 or 4 years.”
