AFA points to Delta pilot terms it has never negotiated for anyone it represents
AFA recently published a blog stating: “If we negotiated the same rate as pilots, Delta would be putting $5,842 into our 401k without us contributing a single dollar of our own.”
However, AFA conveniently excludes that:
- AFA has never negotiated this type of 401(k) benefit for flight attendants – anywhere. In fact, they haven’t even proposed it at any carrier they represent, and United flight attendants don’t have the same 401(k) benefit as United pilots (16% automatic contribution).
- What AFA has actually negotiated at United trails what Delta flight attendants have in terms of total retirement value. Total company 401(k) contributions for United flight attendants, AFA’s largest workgroup, trail Delta flight attendants:
a. Delta: 3% fixed + 6% company match = 9% savings
b. United: 5% fixed + 3% company match = 8% savings
- Delta employees can put profit sharing towards 401(k) and receive additional automatic and matching contributions. United's profit sharing is not eligible for 401(k) company contributions. For 2022 profit sharing, that would mean getting an extra $183 to $411 depending on your step on the scale if putting 6% of profit sharing towards your 401(k).
- Flight pay at United, which is negotiated by AFA, is also lower than Delta’s, meaning the total 401(k) contribution amounts would be lower even at the same contribution levels.
AFA draws attention to pilots, but in our industry, different work groups – pilots, flight attendants, agents, technicians, and others – have different packages of pay, work rules, and benefits. This is another example of AFA trying to distract from the real conversation: its own record. The truth is, AFA has never secured a complete package of pay, benefits, and work rules as strong as Delta’s at any of the carriers it represents.
