United AFA’s 2016 contract is still not fully implemented
Did you know: United AFA’s current contract is still not fully implemented, eight years later.
In 2021, United AFA MEC filed a grievance over seven outstanding items that were negotiated in its 2016 contract but have yet to be implemented. Three years later, a neutral arbitrator issued a decision, providing a timeline for implementation of two items (one in late 2024 and the other in August 2025) and denying the grievance over the other five items.
Contract implementation can take time, particularly for new, complex programs to support work rule changes. Combined with the amount of time contract negotiations can take, it can be many years before flight attendants see some of these changes.
For United flight attendants, negotiations for their current contract began back in 2012. It was ratified in 2016 and remains in effect while United AFA continues negotiations for a new contract – now going on more than two years and counting.
The bottom line: AFA makes big claims to Delta flight attendants about what it can achieve in contract negotiations, but it fails to mention that, even once a contract is negotiated, flight attendants can still wait years for improvements.
Don’t Risk It. Don’t Sign It.
