How Delta’s Retirement Benefits Compare to United and American
IAM has suggested it delivers better retirement benefits than Delta’s plan, but the facts simply don’t support its claims. Here’s what you need to know:
- Last year, Delta asked a leading global HR firm, to look at retirement plans at Delta, United and American, which include 401(k) and pension plans.
- Using publicly available information, these experts looked at how much of their income agents at all three carriers could estimate replacing in retirement, based on a set of assumptions
- Using actual average Delta ramp agent 401(k) balances, the experts looked at four groups of agents of varying years of service (early-career, mid-career, late-career and approaching retirement).
- Experts found that if an agent contributes 6% to their 401(k) – which 90% of Delta employees do – they could estimate replacing as much or more of their income in retirement at age 65 with Delta’s retirement plan versus American and United, including those with pensions.
Ramp and cargo employees at American (represented by IAM/TWU) and United (represented by IAM), are no better off, and often behind, their peers at Delta.
