Two years later, AFA still hasn’t completed a first contract at Avelo
AFA says that it will quickly negotiate a first contract for Delta flight attendants. However, the facts paint a different picture, with lengthy negotiations throughout the industry.
For example, two years after becoming the representative of Avelo flight attendants, AFA has yet to deliver a first contract, having reached tentative agreements on only four of 26 sections. For Avelo’s 225 flight attendants, this leaves key items like compensation, reserve, vacation, and sick leave unresolved. In the meantime, there have been few improvements to pay, benefits, and work rules.
After such little progress, a group of Avelo flight attendants is trying to break away from AFA. Consider how AFA came to represent Avelo flight attendants: in 2022, AFA argued to the National Mediation Board in favor of restricting certain Avelo flight attendants from being eligible to vote in its union election. Ultimately, this meant just 14 of 77 flight attendants were eligible and only eight voted for AFA.
