The reality of negotiations in the airline industry
AFA tells Delta flight attendants that it can quickly negotiate a contract, but the reality is a stark contrast. The negotiations process can take years to complete, without guarantees. Just look at what flight attendants at United, Alaska, and American are currently dealing with:
- AFA-represented flight attendants at United Airlines are still waiting as negotiations continue to stall after three years, with no improvements to pay (last pay increase was in 2021) and only eight out of 34 tentative agreements reached.
- This summer at Alaska Airlines, 68% of eligible AFA-represented flight attendants voted against a tentative agreement. After two years of negotiations, AFA and Alaska Airlines are back at the negotiating table. Alaska flight attendants’ last pay raise was 1.5% in December 2021.
- Since beginning negotiations in 2019, APFA-represented flight attendants at American Airlines reached a new tentative agreement this summer and will vote to accept or reject it on September 12.
- Even smaller carriers struggle with this long and challenging process. At AFA-represented Avelo Airlines, a group of flight attendants is looking to decertify AFA after two years of negotiations and tentative agreements on only four of 26 sections for 225 flight attendants.
