AFA Claim: AFA can negotiate a full contract for a workgroup within a year.
Reality: This is misleading. We are not aware of any example where AFA has done this for a workgroup the size of Delta flight attendants, and negotiations for much smaller workgroups have taken years. In fact, during the first six months of current contract negotiations with United, AFA only reached a tentative agreement for one out of 33 sections of the contract.
Since AFA and United started contract negotiations in October 2021, they have only reached a tentative agreement on one out of 33 sections—and that section has the same language from the previous contract.
It has taken AFA much longer than that to negotiate contracts for much smaller flight attendant groups than even United, and negotiating an initial contract can be one of the most drawn-out processes. For example, GoJet’s first contract negotiations (366 flight attendants) took 3.5 years. It took AFA 9 years to negotiate a contract for about 2,000 flight attendants at Spirit – and that wasn’t even a first contract.
