With an IAM Contract, Dues are Mandatory
Airline union contracts require that employees pay dues as a condition of employment. It's not a choice, and if you don’t pay, the union can require that the company fire you.
Just take a look at language from the “union security” clause in IAM's collective bargaining agreement for American Airlines' Ramp and Cargo employees.
"It shall be a condition of employment that all current employees represented by the Union shall remain members in good standing of the Union, or in lieu thereof, pay a monthly service charge to the Union."
“A termination request will be sent to the Company’s Vice President – Labor Relations… [who] will then take all necessary and proper steps to discharge the employee from the Company’s service.”
"When an employee becomes delinquent or not in good standing...the employee shall be subject to discharge."
Importantly, in the airline industry, state and local right-to-work laws do not apply to airline employment agreements. This means that employees cannot get out of paying dues by living in a certain state or if they’re dissatisfied with union representation.
It’s important to learn about IAM representation.
Don't Risk It. Don't Sign It.
